The Bird Watching Debunk
One local has resorted to taking the broom to her back yard when gardening in an effort to discourage the blue jays who actually live on the property from swooping down at her head. In spite of their aggressive nature there have been no actual reports of blue jays pecking anyone.
Blue Jays' do not have a corner on the market of self preservation, however. En-route to town and the tree walk, Aspatuck flows into a pond where all manner of ducks and swans can be found. Swans have been known to be aggressive. While they are beautiful it is not advisable to get too close because swans attack if they feel threatened and they are strong birds. Don't attempt to feed these fine pond dwellers white bread either, because if you've never been snubbed by a duck before, you will be.
The ducks and swans have been spoiled by people who bring them fancy feasts of seeds, corns, and grains to which their beeks have become accustomed. So much so, that the bearer of white bread is made to feel like a litter bug to the pond. The ducks simply look it over, turn their beeks up in the air and swish their bottoms back to middle of the pond. White bread is left to float atop the water like pieces of unwanted garbage. In spite of the fact that times are leaner this year than they have been in past years, benevolence has not been displaced as far as the ducks and swans are concerned.
