Bird House Kits Make Great Bird Houses

By Lee Dobbins

One great way to attract birds to your garden is by providing them with a comfortable nest in which they would definitely continue returning. Believe it or not, there are bird houses that are already made and there are bird house kits which could be easily assembled on your own. However, if you are adept to working on crafts, you could easily create one simply from any materials that are available around your house.

If you are in any way planning to use a bird house kit, the primary thing to consider is just how you are to use a bird house kit. Do you think the bird house is to be used as a fixture in your own yard? Or do you prefer the bird house to be portable? Do you have a good idea on the specific bird types that you plan to attract? If so, you should therefore have an advanced plan as to what types of bird seeds or feeds to use.

There are also many types of bird house kits that cater to any types of birds. There are those bird house kits that are created for single type birds. There are also others that are for a lot of birds. There are bird house kits that could be hung while there are also others which could be mounted on a post or a fence.

The fact of the matter is that giving yourself appropriate time and effort in planning way ahead will eventually make your bird house making experience a lot satisfying. However, if you are planning to buy a kit that is ready to be assembled, the wood to be used will then be already cut and measured.

Also included in the kits are the hardware. The holes for the bird house are also pre-cut. Another good thing is that the holes for mounting it are also pre-prepared. These kits are also made generally from wood cedar as this type is resistant to weather.

Take note that the bird house kits surfaces are either primed or rough, ready to have a coat paint finish. The good thing about this is that painting it is extremely fun. There are colors you could choose wherein you could go for simple or those that easily attract birds - like a paint job that is a lot fancier.

Believe it or not, these kits could also be made as easily by kids. Therefore, building one could be a very interesting project which kids could easily finish in one session. This also works for cub scout groups or for your grand children. You could even make them and give them out as presents during Christmas!

What you need are basically the following things: (take note that this is usually available in lumber yards or in your local home improvement shops) boards that measure 1X 6, boards that measure 1 X 8, one box of five penny nails, exterior paint (either brown, white, green) that is preferable made of latex for the purpose of making it easy to wash using water, a disposable cheap paintbrush for every bird house kit, a wire single heavy strand, hammers for kids (the less than three dollars kind) for those children who may have forgotten theirs.

All in all, making a bird house is easy as long as you put your mind to it. The important thing of course is for you to enjoy what you are doing and the rest is simply a walk in the park. Nothing really beats seeing your finished project hanging on a tree somewhere with lovely birds nesting innocently on your creation. It brings unquestionable pride for you especially for anyone - especially kids - who may have a part on the making whether you used a pre-made bird house kit or made one from scratch.

Backyard Wildlife Build a Haven for your Furry Friends

by Jackie Harlow

Homeowners spend countless hours trying to make the perfect backyard. From patio stones and outdoor furniture to plants and flowers, thereÃ"'""s no denying the abundance of choices available when it comes to creating a backyard oasis.

While itÃ"'""s easy to setup furniture and plant flowers and trees, itÃ"'""s not always easy to attract backyard wildlife to your retreat. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to your garden and yard that will help build a welcoming environment for your furry friends.

Try making these three things available for animals in your back yard:

Food. Food is the single most important element of your backyard. If you want to attract animals like squirrels and birds, youÃ"'""ll want to make sure thereÃ"'""s sufficient food for them to eat. If you donÃ"'""t have what theyÃ"'""re looking for, theyÃ"'""ll leave your house and find someone else on the block who knows what theyÃ"'""re doing. Bird seed is generally the food of choice for both squirrels and birds but you might want to invest in squirrel-proof bird feeders to make sure the big guys arenÃ"'""t hoarding all the food.

Water. Water is essential when it comes to the health of your backyard animals. Much like humans, animals need water to survive especially in the scorching hot summer months. Keeping fountains running and supplying bowls of water for the animals will ensure they have a safe place to live and will likely keep them coming back for more.

Shelter. Shelter is not necessarily an essential element of your backyard when it comes to attracting wildlife but itÃ"'""s definitely an upgrade. If animals come to your yard for food and water, theyÃ"'""ll definitely appreciate a place to stay especially on stormy, cold, windy days. Having ponds where frogs and fish can swim and trees where birds and other wildlife can play will definitely make your home one of the hottest places for backyard wildlife.

We hope our tips have helped you create a wonderful backyard haven for your favorite furry friends. Next time you look out your window, theyÃ"'""ll be a whole new world of animals staring back at you!

D-I-Y birdhouses and bird feeders

by Daniel Lazaj

If you can provide birds with a safe and secure shelter, variety of food and treats, and clean water, you are sure to attract the most beautiful and unusual birds to your yard.

Birdhouses:

Birdhouses are basically made in many sizes and with a variety of different wood materials. The birds enjoy a safe haven subject to the outside temperatures and predators and it allows them to nest. Birds always need somewhere to nest, so why not build a variety of wooden birdhouses in different sizes for the birds in your area. A basic wooden birdhouse can be very easy to build, and can also be a fun weekend project.

Here are a some important things for you to consider when building your own wooden birdhouse:

Do research the environment and the different variety of birds commonly known to migrate in your region.

Do understand the needs of your feeder birds, such as the size of birdhouse, and location of birdhouse.

Don"€™t paint, stain, varnish, or treat the inside or around the hole entrance of the birdhouse, this will keep away the birds. There are many different woods that you can use to make your birdhouse, but most commonly used is Cedar. Cedar wood is a good material which does not need to be pained, stained, or treated.

Avoid using a perch on the birdhouse. By putting a perch on the birdhouse, the bird may become trapped inside the birdhouse because of fear. A perch will allow a predator bird to wait on the perch until the smaller birds comes out.

Drill the proper entrance hole, for the bird you are trying to attract. Again, the importance of size. You will need to research the birds in your area and which ones you would like to invite to your backyard.

Location:

The importance of a great location to properly install your birdhouse is a big part of your awaited new guests. Once you are done building your birdhouse, you will need to find a good location, that is away from any danger, such as cats, and weather. A good location would be somewhere in your property that doesn"€™t have to much human activity, but will allow you to view the birds without interference. The birdhouse can be hung on a tree, or mounted to a pole or tree limb, and should be at least 3 to 10 feet high.

Bird feeder:

Adding bird feeders to your property is another great way to attract birds. As stated above, you must research the different variety of birds commonly known to migrate in your region, that will give you some insight as to what kind of birdfeed and treats to fill your birdfeeders. Once birds discover your newly built bird feeder and the great treats you are providing them, you can expect to start seeing the birds flock into your backyard.

Building a basic wooden bird feeder is not difficult at all, you can get many ideas by searching for bird feeder plans on the internet, or visiting a bookstore or library.

Water:

Birds are also attracted by water. Birds need a water area for drinking and for bathing. This to is a project that you can make on your own, or if you do not have time buy at a store. It is suggested that you research different bird bath plans and see if this is a project you would like to do. You can also use any shallow container to hold water. You can place them on the ground or above the ground, near the feeders would be a good location. If you do have cats in the area it would be suggested that you make it closer and accessible to the birds so that they do not become victim to such animals.

How To Make Bird Seed Bells

How Wind Chimes Make Noise

by Elizabeth Jean

There are several different types of wind chimes that make noise in different ways. All wind chimes are percussion instruments. That means the noise is created when a hammer or clapper strikes another part of the wind chime and causes the air around it to resonate. Different materials and arrangements produce different tones.

Some wind chimes are collections of small bells. Each bell has a clapper, and as the wind moves the bell, the clapper hits it and the bell rings. Each bell produces a single tone. Japanese wind bells and a Buddhist sixteen bell chime are examples of this type of wind chime.

Some wind chimes are more like a gong, where a hammer strikes one or more flat or curved circular plates. They fill the air with the resonating sound of a gong. An example is a Japanese Emperor gong.

Another type of wind chime is made of suspended objects that strike one another when the wind moves them. These chimes may not make music; they may have a more percussive noise. These chimes are easy to make out of common household items, such as nuts and bolts or knives and spoons.

The most common type of wind chime is made of hollow tubes or solid rods which are struck by a solid clapper. These chimes are often tuned to produce specific sounds that are pleasing to the ear.

Sometimes, such as with pagoda wind chimes, tubular chimes are combined with bells. This gives a combination of the tinkling sound of bells and the chime of rods.

No matter what kind of wind chime you are talking about, the wind is what initiates the noise. If the air is still, the wind chime doesn't make any noise.

The wind creates the amount of noise a wind chime makes. A gentle breeze might produce a gentle tinkling sound, whereas a howling wind could produce a vigorous clanging. Some wind chimes will give different sounds when the wind blows from different directions.

Whether a wind chime is made of bells, gongs, tuned rods or household junk, the noise it makes is produced when the wind blows through it, causing one part to strike against another and causing the air to resonate.

How To Make Your Own Wooden Bird Feeder

By Dave Everett

You can make your wooden bird feeder as simple or extravagant as you desire, according to your level of expertise. Those who are more adept with the tools of woodworking, may want to try their hand at making a wooden castle bird feeder. The idea behind this is to have all the stools on each side of the castle manufactured so as to stick out for the birds to eat their food out of. Or maybe you consider yourself to be talented enough to make a tube that spirals around, having a trough for the birds to snack away at. However, if you are not so talented and have never built one before, you may want to start with a simple step-by-step design.

You could try starting with a simple wooden tray feeder, where you just glue and nail a few pieces of wood together. As you become more experienced in constructing your wooden bird feeders, you'll be able to experiment a bit more until you feel confident enough to make the bigger feeders that call for a lot more talent and patience. As a child, perhaps you may have built your very first wooden tray feeders in wood shop. On the other hand, if you weren't fortunate enough to take the class you may have built your own bird feeder at home using a soda bottle or a coffee can. I can remember, back when I was a child, taking the empty coffee can, filling it up with my dad's sunflower seeds and hanging it from a tree just to watch the birds come to the yard Endless hours of pleasure!

Check out this quick and easy way to make a simple wooden tray feeder. Please keep in mind that if you are a child you will need adult supervision.

MAKING A WOODEN TRAY FEEDER

4 pieces of wood about 2 inches wide

1 square piece of wood

Nails

Use the square piece of wood as the base for your wooden tray feeder. Now take your four pieces of wood and prop them up on all sides of the square. Hammer each strip to the base until you have a small square dish with sides. Insert a newspaper into the base, making sure to flatten it down properly so it doesn't fly out. Pour in the seeds and you are set to go. On top of a large post or table would be a great place to position your tray.

Children love building bird feeders as well. Once they spot you making one they'll naturally want to do something to help. Try giving them a pine cone, butter knife and some peanut butter and have them spread it all over the pine cone. When finished, have them sprinkle seeds all over it. They'll be happy that they got to make a bird feeder too.

Hopper feeders are little wooden bird feeders that look like houses; birds love these because they keep the wind and rain off them.

When caring for your wooden bird feeders always remember that you need to empty them of food every night, unless you can somehow cover them. Rain can ruin bird seeds and make birds extremely sick, and I'm sure that's the last thing you want.

Bird watching has always been, and always will be, a fun hobby. By building your own wooden bird feeders, you can make this a time full of memories for you and your children.

Decide what type of feeder you'll use and where in the yard it will go. Location is a key item when it comes to wooden bird feeders. If you don't have it in the right place the birds may never find it.

Attracting Wild Birds With a Bird Garden

By Janet Ashby

You can use bird feeders and bird baths to attract wild birds to your garden but if you also plant a bird garden you can increase the attractiveness of your garden enormously.

Trees, shrubs and flowers can provide shelter from predators and the winter cold and provide natural food for the birds for the whole year. Providing a safe environment with a natural source of food will make your wild bird visitors feel safe and they will visit often. Your garden may already provide some natural food but small changes can easily increase the availability of the food and make your garden even more attractive.

Plan your Bird Garden

Find out which birds are common in your area and base your plan around them. You can find out from the local library or bird society or by watching birds that are attracted to bird feeders in your area. Include native plants in your plan as they are most likely to thrive and will provide suitable natural food for the birds.

Make your basic plan and include trees, power lines, buildings, paths, shrubs etc and ensure you plan sunny as well as shady areas. Fond out of there are any native plants that can be left to grow in your new garden. Have the soil tested before you start to find out the type of soil you have and any deficiencies that may be present. You can then add nutrients or minerals to restore the soil quality first and also ensure you buy plants suitable for the type of soil.

You will need a source of fresh, running water in your bird garden. This could be a pond with a fountain, a bird bath with a dripper or a spray in the trees. Plan to place a bird bath away from any bird feeders as birds need quiet for bathing away from the noise of birds feeding. A good place is away from any hiding places for cats or other predators under overhanging branches to allow the birds to escape into the branches if a predator approaches.

Plant Your Bird Garden

You should plant shrubs, trees and flowers that provide seeds, nuts, berries or nectar the whole year round in your bird garden. Trees need to have enough branches to support nests but not be so thick they prevent the birds from freely moving through them. Sketch in the plants on your plan and ensure you have some sunny areas and some shady areas. Take into consideration the size the shrubs and trees will eventually grow to and decide how many you can fit into the area.

When you begin to plant your garden involve the whole family. They will enjoy the fun! It's a good idea to take plenty of photographs to document your progress. Taking pictures of the same spot throughout the seasons can give a lovely record of all you have achieved.

Maintaining Your Garden

You will need to plan on time to maintain your garden. Keep the area round your new plants moist and use a mulch to help retain the moisture and discourage weeds. This will also help to maintain the garden without the use of harsh insecticides or herbicides which should be avoided. Many are poisonous to the birds and they will also cut down on the number of insects that are a major part of the food source of many birds.

Place bird feeders around your garden, hanging from trees or posts and place a bird bath away from the feeders but visible from your window so you can enjoy your bird visitors while they bathe.

It may be many months before you see the results of your hard work but once your garden is thriving you will be rewarded by the many wild birds visiting your bird garden.
